No Good for Me

This song makes me laugh because it sounds so sweet and good but when you actually listen to the lyrics it really isn’t intended in that way. Jeremih sings “Only care about yourself (yeyah)
Give a fuck ’bout no one else (no no)”. The woman he is singing about sounds very selfish to be honest.

My favourite part of the song is the beat if I’m honest. I like the feeling when the beat drops. The producer ADP is British and has produced songs like Krept & Konan’s ‘Freak of the Week’.

This song will have you bopping your head for sure.

Do Not Disturb

Recently I watched an interview with singer, dancer and actress ‘Teyana Taylor’. I found her quite refreshing as I hadn’t really taken time out to listen to her talk before. I know she was signed to Kanye’s ‘GOOD Music’ label and always wondered why I had never heard of her songs. After some research I concluded that I don’t think she was marketed enough. Anyway, I listened to her previous albums and was pleasantly suprised at what I heard. She said that she uses 90’s r&b as her inspiration and I can see how that is the case.

This particular song is one of my favourites. It features Chris Brown & of course their voices compliment each other.

Permission.

I remember when I first heard this song and the context! Rotimi (The artist I have previously mentioned) was doing a cycle workout to it. Ro James has such a soothing voice. This song is basically him asking his woman to give her consent so he can give her the love she deserves. I feel this song is so fitting at a time where consent is talked about so much. It is refreshing to hear a man asking for permission so politely instead of assuming what a woman consents to. My favourite line has to be “I just wanna put a little smile on you with your permission”. There’s just an element of Ro acting the absolute gentlemen throughout the song and I love that.

Closure

I was recently at an event where they played some R&B songs that stuck with me. Due to this, I discovered an artist called Sy Ari Da Kid. I checked out some of his songs and one in particular stands out as a favourite. The song called “Closure” features Tink and unsurprisingly the song is exactly about closure in a relationship. One thing I love in particular is when Tink sings “I love you, but I don’t wanna cuff you” which I find refreshing to hear from a woman’s perspective. With artists like Bryson Tiller recently, we usually hear this from a man’s point of view.

I like that she seems to have some sort of control in this song. She sings that she’s used to his games which is why she knows she cannot be in a relationship however he still has a hold on her. This song ends as confused as they were in the beginning and I think it’s such a great representation of life. Nothing is ever in black and white and sometimes we experience that.

I will definitely be listening to more of his music.

Jupa

As soon as the verse starts and Stormzy raps “You can take my hand in marriage it’ll be my honour” I knew I was gonna love this song. I like how Stormzy incorporated an Afrobeat theme with his music for once. I also enjoy how there is Yoruba infused in this song with lines such as “Omo oshe baby”. The video to this song is quite poor though so I wish they could have done it better. Other than that, this is one of my favourite Stormzy songs for sure.

Mr Carter

Ayyyyyyy. This song cements the two Carters of the rap industry. I feel this song provides us with a raw version of Wayne. I have a few favourite lines; “Winter hatin’ on me ’cause I’m colder than y’all
And I will never, I will never, I will never Fall”. You can’t recite those lyrics without feeling it in your soul!!

I also believe a line that Wayne says “And next time you mention Pac, Biggie, or Jay-Z, Don’t forget Weezy, baby!”. There was a time Lil Wayne was seen as one of the best. I don’t know though…I don’t know if I can put him on the same steps the other greats. 🤔🤔
