Throwback Thursday (UK Style)

In 2015 British rapper Tinie Tempah released his ‘Junk Food’ mixtape. The tape featured some of the UK’S best artists. The mixtape was Tinie Tempah reminding people that he was still a rapper. This particular song ‘100 Friends’ features one of our best… J Hus.

The verse from J Hus could be argued to be one of his best guest verses. A particular line that sticks out “If she don’t like Hus, then she must like women”. Hus uses his clever punchlines to articulate his talent throughout the whole verse. Another great thing about this song is the production produced by the incredible Nana Rogues. He also produced ‘Been The man’, ‘We don’t play no games’, ‘Autogas’, ‘Look at me and ‘Might Flip’ on the tape.

Have a listen below if you haven’t heard the song or the mixtape.

Throwback Thursday (UK Style)

‘Black Boys’ (2007) by UK rapper Bashy is arguably one of his most famous songs. The song is a powerful track focussing on the positives of Black people. Bashy addresses the Black kids in Britain who feel there aren’t a lot of good representation of Black people in the media. “There’s bare positive black boys around you making movements”, he reminds them that there are a lot of role models.

This song is embedded in many people’s childhood as a song that inspired and put hope in the minds of young black kids in London. The song can still be related to today’s society as positive images of people of colour in the media are still rare especially in the UK. With the recent anniversary of Martin Luther King’s death and birthday of the late, great Maya Angelou, I question who the greats of this generation will be.

The song’s bridge is sang by Loick Essien “Ooh child, things are gonna get easier”. We still hope and pray that is the case.

Throwback Thursday (US Style)

It’s Thursday so what better day to focus on some throwbacks! Remember to follow my ‘Slowjams/Throwbacks” Spotify playlist. Link is above.

One of the songs that is the focus today is a song by the US singer Mario. The song was featured on his 2004 album ‘Turning Point’. These were the days music was actually in CD form. I remember going out to buy the CD and had the album on repeat. I can recite all the lyrics. This song is great to be playing in summer and can relate to anytime. The song is Mario singing on what he wants to have in a woman. He sings “I need a girl thats smart (& really intelligent) a girl with heart, somebody who dont take no s***”. I like how he encourages the idea of a strong woman. Baby Cham offers a “bashment” feel and is able to express his idea that he would like a “ride or die” woman.

If you haven’t heard the album I suggest you have a listen. The album is filled with hits!

Making Love (Into the Night)

Listen. I am the BIGGEST Usher fan EVER. My biggest wish is to attend a concert where he can perform every song from his classic ‘Confessions’ album.

This particular song is just a casual underrated song he previously released. My favourite line/bit is actually towards the end around the 3 minute mark where he sings “You gonna wanna tell everybody ’bout how I got you all”… where the beat changes and his voice gets deeper. The song is classic Usher. He sings about pleasing his woman in all the right ways.
