Throwback Thursday (Afrobeats Special)

Today’s feature is from Nigerian legend D’Banj. The song is called “Fall In Love” and was released in 2008. The song is based on D’Banj telling a lady that she is the love of his life and she has made him a different person.

The first line always gets me; “Don’t get it twisted, love is a beautiful thing!” which is a warning before he proceeds to tell us how the woman he is directing the song at has changed his life. Personally this song is a great example of the way Nigerians compliment; “My sweet potato i wanna tel u my mind….Wanna tell u my mind o i no understand o”. Nigerians have a way of using dramatic metaphors that will have you smiling or certainly laughing! Before “Afrobeats” became popular and a mainstream market, D’Banj used to be the King of the genre. This song is definitely considered one of his classics.

Bob Marley and Lauryn Hill are arguably and respectably considered two of the some of the greatest musicians of all time.

‘Turn your lights down Low’ featuring Lauryn Hill, released in 1999 is a remix of Bob’s original song. The song almost sounds like it was made for a voice like Lauryn. The song is marinated with so many harmonies as Lauryn repeatedly sings “I wanna give you some love…I wanna give you some good, good lovin'”. Lauryn even provides a rap voice to expand her already talented range. The song is definitely one of the greats and if you haven’t had a listen, please do.

I love listening to old school music because the messages are always timeless. A song to start your week is an old song by artist Donell Jones. The song was part of his 2006 studio album entitled ‘Journey of a Gemini’.

The song is a serenade to a mystery women where Donell sings that he is willing to go anything she wishes. “I dont want you to think about none of the problems you got going on baby”. The song features Bun B and he provides a nice rap balance to the soft song.

After Beyoncé’s Coachella performances, it has reminded me of her brilliant discography. Her first studio album ‘Dangerously in Love’ can be argued to be one of her best albums. The album is filled with love songs and classics. One of my favourites on the album is ”Me, Myself and I”. The introduction to the song is enough; “All the ladies, if you feel me help me sing it out” as her tone of voice changes.

The song is based on a woman who’s had enough of dealing with her boyfriends issues and womanising ways. The song shows how she implements the importance of self worth and how she gains independence from the breakdown of the relationship. The song could be considered to be a common song sang by women after a break up with the idea it uplifts them.

My favourite lines would have to be; “Got me, myself, and I) I know that I will never disappoint myself”. Sometimes we are given horrible experiences in life but the most important thing to learn is that nobody has you more than yourself.

Kanye West released “Only One” as the first single after his album Yeezus. Paul McCartney co-produced it and it is definitely one of Kanye’s more emotional songs. The concept is based on the fact the song is sung from the perspective of Kanye’s late mother Donda West as she looks down from heaven at her son and granddaughter. The ultimate line in this song is “No you’re not perfect but you’re not your mistakes”. Those lines are lessons to live by.

Throwback Thursday (UK Style)

British R&B singer Angel released his debut studio album entitled ‘About Time’ in 2013. One of my favourite songs on the album is called “Blown Away” and it features Nigerian superstar Wizkid.

The song is based on the first feeling you get when you fall for someone; “I’m getting this feeling
That I’m falling in love with you”. Angels beautiful sensual voice and Wizkid’s Nigerian vibes mix so well. My favourite lines; “When you appear my heart starts racing. Whirlwind but I’m in the same place”. That wonderful feeling of love you get when you find the person meant for you is beautiful.

Throwback Thursday (US Style)

Beyoncé’s third studio album released in 2008, “I Am… Sasha Fierce” was possibly one of her best albums. The album featured two disks. The first one focusing on her usual slow/R&B ballads while the second focused on her alter ego ‘Sacha Fierce’ meaning more uptempo songs.

The song ‘Scared of Lonely’ was featured on the deluxe version and focusses on Beyoncé asking for care and attention in the relationship. Beyoncé as the ability to convey the emotions she wings about. The song allows us to witness a vulnerable side; “I’m scared of lonely & I’m scared of being the only shadow I see along the wall”. The lyrics in this song portray Beyoncé as a woman who is being neglected from her other half.

The song showcases Beyoncés vocal range and the only regret was that this was not released as a single.

Where is the Love?

Where Is The Love?” is a song by The Black Eyed Peas mostly focussing on police brutality, racism, gang violence and terrorism.

Last night a 17 year old girl was shot dead in North London. Before today , there have been 46 murders in London in 2018, including 31 fatal stabbings. This HAS to stop. Kids are killing kids and it’s beyond sad.

Everytime something bad like this happens in London, I remember this BEP song. “People killin’, people dyin’…Children hurt and you hear ’em cryin”. These lines couldn’t be more relevant. People are DYING , kids are killing and for what!? Where is the love!?

“Negative images is the main criteria, Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria”. This line feels very relatable because the fact young people are killing or even having access to such weapons makes you wonder. What is it that is corrupting these kids to make them think killing is ok?

I feel myself constantly reciting Justin’s verse when he sings “Father, father, father, help us
send some guidance from above. These people got me, got me questionin’, Where is the love?” The only thing I can do is pray but I really do pray this gets better because this honestly can’t continue.

Better Man

PND is infamous for his soothing slow jams. This song is no different. The only difference being Rick Ross is able to give a taste of his own flavour. Similarly to P Square’s song ‘Beautiful Onyinye” which features Ross, he is able to provide the song with a nice contrast to the calming melody already present. In this song it is evident that PND is singing about someone he had wronged proclaiming he wants to be a “better man”.

The lyrics that stick out to me mostly are “It seems like breakin’ your heart is the easiest part & lovin’ you right, only gets harder”. The juxtaposition in those lines stand out. They highlight the contradiction he feels. He wants to be a better man but he doesn’t act like one. He wants to make her happy but he isn’t. It is more apparent in the fact he keeps repeating the lines “What do I gotta do? Yeah (What do I gotta do?)” emphasising his confusion.

I do feel he is saying breaking her heart is the easiest because if he continues staying with her he will continue to break her. If he breaks her heart and leaves then maybe he can use that time to be the man she deserves…a “Better Man”.

The only Reason…

JP Cooper is someone I have only discovered recently but I am a fan of his music. This particular song has beautiful words. You can’t help but feel warm inside when you hear it playing.

In particular the lines “The only reason God gave me eyes was to see you…the only reason God gave me ears was to hear your voice”. Such beautiful words to hear which match his sensual voice. I will definitely be looking forward to more music from him.

The Real Her.

I once saw someone tweet “She’s an Andre 3000 verse in a world of mumble rap.”. That statement couldn’t be more accurate in this song. Andre’s verse in this song is so beautiful. He has the ability to make any song sound poetic.

My favourite line would have to be “Everybody has an addiction; mine happens to be you & those who say they don’t, souls will later on say to them that ain’t true”. You can deny all you want but everyone has a weak spot. Sooner or later it will be apparent.

I love the fact Drake let the song end after that verse and didn’t continue it with the chorus. Really, after Andre’s verse nothing more needed to be said.

Making Love (Into the Night)

Listen. I am the BIGGEST Usher fan EVER. My biggest wish is to attend a concert where he can perform every song from his classic ‘Confessions’ album.

This particular song is just a casual underrated song he previously released. My favourite line/bit is actually towards the end around the 3 minute mark where he sings “You gonna wanna tell everybody ’bout how I got you all”… where the beat changes and his voice gets deeper. The song is classic Usher. He sings about pleasing his woman in all the right ways.
