Tune Tuesday

Song of the day today is by an Italian band going by the name of ‘Tauro Boys’.

The band consisting of 4 guys are able to fuse Italian on a trap beat. The song is definitely a club hit and the production is very good. This band could be future chart toppers.

Check the song out below.

Songs to start of the Week;

These 3 songs are songs to look out for and listen to this week:

1. Lady Leshur – Black Panther.

Lady Leshur is a female UK rapper & is probably best known for her infamous ‘Queen’s Speech’ freestyles. This particular song has a similar authenticity to her previous material and the song demonstrates her rapping talent. The accompanying video shows Leshur rapping on a train and in an alley with frequent references “Wakanda Forever” to the famous 2018 movie ‘Black Panther’. Her wordplay isis next to none which makes her one of the best the UK has. Favourite Line: “heat like Miami, free throw on ’em, Dwayne Wade on the gyally….Um, that’s a 3-second violation”

2. Da Beatfreakz Ft. Mr Eazi, Seyi Shay & Shakka – Take Over.

Any song featuring Mr Eazi, Seyi Shay or Shakka is bound to be hit so you can imagine how good it is with all of them together on the same song! You’ll be singing “take over, take over” all day after hearing this song. The harmonies, the fusion of Seyi Shay’s soothing voice with Shakka’s unique sound and lovely afrobeat vibe provided by Mr Eazi makes it a future hit for sure. Favourite Line:”Baby let me sweet your tea”

3. Cardi B – I Like It Ft. J Balvin & Bad Bunny.

Arguably one of the stand out songs from Cardi B’s highly anticipated debut album. The song mixes latina music and reggaeton on a trap beat. I love the fact Cardi goes back to her Latina roots and it is a refreshing chaange from the mood on the album. This song will probably be a big summer hit and could possbly be the next Luis Fonsi “Despacito” in terms of popularity. Definitely a great song to start the week on! Favourite Line/section: “Eating halal, driving the Lam’, told that bitch I’m sorry though…bout my coins like Mario….yeah they call me Cardi B, I run this shit like cardio” (Then the beat changes and it is amazing)

New Music Friday: Invasion of Privacy

The highly anticipated debut album from woman of the moment Cardi B is finally out!!! Her debut song ‘Bodak Yellow’ was arguably one of the hits of 2017. The song allowed the world to see Cardi B in a different light, a legitimate artist, rather than just a character on the TV show “Love and Hip Hop’. This album is one of the best debut rap albums I have heard in a while. The production on each song is incredible and you can tell some real thought and effort when into the making of this album. I will focus on specific songs in due course and I always believe albums should take time to marinate in your ears for at least a week before you can choose the real hits. However, on first listen these are my quick opinions.

  1. Get up 10 (Intro) . This is such a great introduction to the album and reminds me of the infamous introduction on Meek Mill’s “Dreams and Nighmares’ album. Favourite line: “I was covered in dollars, now I’m drippin’ in jewels”, pretty much sums up Cardi as a whole.
  2. Drip Ft. Migos. Typical Migos song meaning very hyped and very catchy, Cardi’s verse was good. Only issue is that Cardi was drowned out on her own song. Migos definitely overtook it. Favourite line would have to be every adlib when “Ice” is mentioned.
  3.  Bickenhead. Pure rap. This song really demonstrates Cardi’s rap ability. The song will definitely have you bopping your head. Favourite line: I’ma flex like a ‘roid, I’m a ten, she a ‘droid”
  4. Bodak Yellow. Classic. The song that started it all and it is yet to get old. Favourite line: These expensive, these is red bottoms, these is bloody shoes”….classic!
  5. Be Careful. This song was released a few days earlier and while many were not expected this direction from Cardi, I welcome the refreshment. Only wish is that a singer such as Dej Loaf was the one singing the chorus. It is nice to see Cardi in a more vulnerable light though and it reminds us that she is human and can be be versatile. Favourite lines: “Thinkin’ I’m flawed because you inconsistent…
It’s gon’ hurt me to hate you, but lovin’ you’s worse”.
  6. Best Life Ft. Chance the Rapper. One of my favourites on the album. I love the sentiment behind it. Chance as usual adds his own unique signature to it. Favourite line: “I made a couple M’s with my best friends, turned all my L’s into lessons”
  7.  I like it Ft. Bad Bunny & J Balvin . If you are a fan of Reggaeton or latina music, this song will definitely win your hearts. You cannot listen to this song without feeling like you want to salsa or cha-cha! Favourite line: Oh he’s so handsome, what’s his name”. Full review coming soon.
  8. Ring Ft. Kehlani. This song is enough to get anyone in their feels. Kehlani’s beautiful voice provides the song with a R&B feel. Favourite line: “You gon’ be sick to your, stomach” (more the tone change at that part but will provide a more detailed review in due course)
  9. Money Bag. Possibly my least favourite on the album because the song sounds extremely similar to ‘Bodak Yellow’ in terms of the flow. This song does have one of my favourite lines though; “I said “Bae, it’s a snack,” he said it’s a entrée”. Haha
  10. Bartier Cardi Ft. 21 Savage. This song was released as the second single on this album (after Bodak Yellow). The flow on this demonstrates her ability and I believe 21 Savage compliments the vibe of this song so well. Favourite line: I like hot sauce on my chicken”
  11. She Bad Ft. YG. I almost didn’t even recognise YG on this song! He sounds very different but I do like this song. Favourite line: I could buy designer but this Fashion Nova fit”
  12.  I Do Ft. SZA. A very fitting end to the album andI can’t think of anyone else who would do this song justice other than SZA. Favourite line:  My little 15 minutes lasted long as hell, huh”

Throwback Thursday (UK Style)

‘Black Boys’ (2007) by UK rapper Bashy is arguably one of his most famous songs. The song is a powerful track focussing on the positives of Black people. Bashy addresses the Black kids in Britain who feel there aren’t a lot of good representation of Black people in the media. “There’s bare positive black boys around you making movements”, he reminds them that there are a lot of role models.

This song is embedded in many people’s childhood as a song that inspired and put hope in the minds of young black kids in London. The song can still be related to today’s society as positive images of people of colour in the media are still rare especially in the UK. With the recent anniversary of Martin Luther King’s death and birthday of the late, great Maya Angelou, I question who the greats of this generation will be.

The song’s bridge is sang by Loick Essien “Ooh child, things are gonna get easier”. We still hope and pray that is the case.

Throwback Thursday (US Style)

It’s Thursday so what better day to focus on some throwbacks! Remember to follow my ‘Slowjams/Throwbacks” Spotify playlist. Link is above.

One of the songs that is the focus today is a song by the US singer Mario. The song was featured on his 2004 album ‘Turning Point’. These were the days music was actually in CD form. I remember going out to buy the CD and had the album on repeat. I can recite all the lyrics. This song is great to be playing in summer and can relate to anytime. The song is Mario singing on what he wants to have in a woman. He sings “I need a girl thats smart (& really intelligent) a girl with heart, somebody who dont take no s***”. I like how he encourages the idea of a strong woman. Baby Cham offers a “bashment” feel and is able to express his idea that he would like a “ride or die” woman.

If you haven’t heard the album I suggest you have a listen. The album is filled with hits!

Freaky Friday.

This song called “Freaky Friday” by Lil Dicky & Chris Brown is so fun and is such a feel good song. The concept is what would happen if Lil Dicky and Chris swapped bodies. Even though it is supposed to be light hearted, every joke contains an element of truth. It’s an interesting perspective. I love the concept and it is such a catchy song.

However, I want to talk about the part in the song where Lil Dicky (in Chris Brown’s body) sings “wondering if I can say the n word” before he proceeds to sing it a number of times. That line made me think about the use of the word to be honest. I’m black but why do us Black people continue to use a word with such negative connotations? Some will argue “oh it’s used as a term of endearment now” but why that word? When a non black person uses that word we feel uncomfortable and quite rightly. However I genuinely belive the word shouldn’t be repeated by anyone of any skin colour. By using the word amongst us, we open the door for others to abuse it and that’s where the lines get blurred.

Vroom!

Yxng Bane is one of the finest, freshest UK talents we have at the moment. This particular song fuses afrobeats with the use of Pidgin English (a common Nigerian dialect) and pop.

I love the car analogy; “Ah who got the keys to the beamer, her body goes vroom vroom vroom” comparing the woman’s exterior to a car. I believe Yxng Bane has been one of the most consistent artists at the moment. This song definitely does not disappoint.

Don’t waste My Time.

I love this song because I think everyone can relate. No one enjoys having their time wasted. I never would have put Keyshia Cole on a song with Young Thug but it blends quite well. The track is produced by ‘London on Da Track’ who is most famous for producing Young Thug’s hit song “Lifestyle” as well as many other hits.

I also enjoy the fact Thug sings and raps on this song. One of my favourite lines is rapped by Thug; “I’m stackin’ bread and it’s wheat like Timbs”. I like his use of wordplay comparing wheat to the colour of timbs.

The beat on this song is so good. I would recommend playing this song in some very loud speakers!!!

Where is the Love?

Where Is The Love?” is a song by The Black Eyed Peas mostly focussing on police brutality, racism, gang violence and terrorism.

Last night a 17 year old girl was shot dead in North London. Before today , there have been 46 murders in London in 2018, including 31 fatal stabbings. This HAS to stop. Kids are killing kids and it’s beyond sad.

Everytime something bad like this happens in London, I remember this BEP song. “People killin’, people dyin’…Children hurt and you hear ’em cryin”. These lines couldn’t be more relevant. People are DYING , kids are killing and for what!? Where is the love!?

“Negative images is the main criteria, Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria”. This line feels very relatable because the fact young people are killing or even having access to such weapons makes you wonder. What is it that is corrupting these kids to make them think killing is ok?

I feel myself constantly reciting Justin’s verse when he sings “Father, father, father, help us
send some guidance from above. These people got me, got me questionin’, Where is the love?” The only thing I can do is pray but I really do pray this gets better because this honestly can’t continue.

Better Man

PND is infamous for his soothing slow jams. This song is no different. The only difference being Rick Ross is able to give a taste of his own flavour. Similarly to P Square’s song ‘Beautiful Onyinye” which features Ross, he is able to provide the song with a nice contrast to the calming melody already present. In this song it is evident that PND is singing about someone he had wronged proclaiming he wants to be a “better man”.

The lyrics that stick out to me mostly are “It seems like breakin’ your heart is the easiest part & lovin’ you right, only gets harder”. The juxtaposition in those lines stand out. They highlight the contradiction he feels. He wants to be a better man but he doesn’t act like one. He wants to make her happy but he isn’t. It is more apparent in the fact he keeps repeating the lines “What do I gotta do? Yeah (What do I gotta do?)” emphasising his confusion.

I do feel he is saying breaking her heart is the easiest because if he continues staying with her he will continue to break her. If he breaks her heart and leaves then maybe he can use that time to be the man she deserves…a “Better Man”.

No Good for Me

This song makes me laugh because it sounds so sweet and good but when you actually listen to the lyrics it really isn’t intended in that way. Jeremih sings “Only care about yourself (yeyah)
Give a fuck ’bout no one else (no no)”. The woman he is singing about sounds very selfish to be honest.

My favourite part of the song is the beat if I’m honest. I like the feeling when the beat drops. The producer ADP is British and has produced songs like Krept & Konan’s ‘Freak of the Week’.

This song will have you bopping your head for sure.
